Myeongdong Food – Milky Bee

When we found about the Seoul Lantern Festival, we decided it was an event we could not miss. Because the trip to Seoul can sometimes be a couple hours on the metro, we like to do a couple different things every time we go into the city. This time, we combined the festival with looking at the Chrysanthemum exhibit near City Hall and Myeongdong, which according to some internet sources, is Seoul’s #1 shopping district.

Myeongdong Goals

Trip Goals: Get ice cream in Myeongdong, Visit the Chrysanthemum exhibit, check out Seoul Lantern Festival
Success: All, and more.

Now, we haven’t written about Itaewon yet and have only visited once, but so far, we don’t get the hype. On the other hand, we think areas like Myeongdong and Insadong, are pretty neat.

When we arrived at Myeongdong Station we wandered around the area for a little bit, but we were both pretty hungry. I ate before we left and Kyle had a snack but we seem to require more food than others, especially with all of the walking we have been doing. We were already planning to get ice cream here but once there wanted some “real” food too.

Kyle Ate a Family Size Plate Alone

We passed by a place that appeared to have vegetarian food so we went inside. They cook all the food together in a big pot and everyone at the table is supposed to share. This would be fine, except Kyle wanted meat and I did not. We thought about trying to order two dishes and ask them to keep them separate but we were having too much trouble communicating with them already so we just ordered the vegetable plate.

Unfortunately, I thought it was disgusting. There are few foods I don’t like aside from meat and eggs in most forms. Right now the only thing I can think of is ketchup when it isn’t mixed with mayonnaisse. The ice noodles were so chewy and small and I don’t know, slimy or slurpy? Whatever the sauce was that covered everything just didn’t taste right to me. My guess was it had some type of seafood thing in it.

I could not eat it but it was huge. It’s a good thing we only got the one dish because Kyle (who actually did like the meal) ate as much as he could and could not even finish. Luckily, they had a “salad” bar that came with the meal so I had a few helpings of everything available. The bar had kimchi, pickled radishes, and things of that nature.

The Milky Bee

Of course I was still hungry after this and I wanted to try the rose ice cream at Milky Bee. I had seen it online and thought it would be a great dessert.

We only ordered one meal at the other place anyway and it was a pretty good deal, so it didn’t set us back too much. I already planned for us to get both the rose ice cream and the honeycomb soft serve (the two things they are known for) and once we went to order, what do you know?

They had an option called “Best Choice” which was a full rose (you can get different numbers of layers) and a helping of the honeycomb soft serve.
They actually do have other ice cream as well but this was obviously our choice.

Being a specialty place, it came out to be KRW10,500 (~$9) total.

Get It:

Leave out of exit 9 at the Myeongdong station. Walk straight. Turn right on the second street you pass and it will be straight down (within vision.)]

Be sure to take a picture of the rose ice cream before you lick it!

We had fun eating the ice cream and walking around Myeongdong.

We would eat one for a while and then switch as we looked at all the various street vendors and shops like chestnuts roasting on an open fire..

Lotte Young Plaza

We then made our way over to the Lotte Young Plaza and Lotte Department Store where we saw Christmas decorations! Yay!

Christmas in Seoul

We went inside and the place is huge! There are all kinds of things in here. It is beyond a department store or Walmart, I guess more like an upscale mall (but it also has a grocery store in it.) I was still hungry so we grabbed me a single donut at the Krispy Kreme. Yum!

We went back outside and simply took in all the holiday-ness before heading over to the Seoul Lantern Festival.
